Fundamentals of Macroeconomics Essay Example for Free

Fundamentals of Macroeconomics EssaySome of the terms that are frequently used in economics are coarse domestic product (GDP), real GDP, titulary GDP, unemployment tread, inflation position, and interest posts. Gross domestic product is the money take to be of the nations productivity. GDP is the value of all finished goods and services produced within the countrys border. authoritative GDP is the market value of the final goods and services produced in a year. Real GDP means that it was adjusted for inflation so it go forth show a more accurate figure. Without real GDP our market values would opine a lot higher than they really were and this helps us when trying to see what our productivity was.Nominal GDP is also known as the current dollar bill amount. It is the gross domestic product that has non been adjusted for inflation. Nominal GDP can be misleading because it does not adjust the inflation amount. For example if the nominal GDP figure showed that it shot up 1 0% but inflation has been 5% the real GDP has really only increased 5%. The unemployment rate is a percent of people who are not currently working but are willing and able to work or currently seeking. on that point are three different types of unemployment. The unemployment rate is figured by dividing the number of unemployed people by the number of people who are working and and then multiplied by 100. Inflation rate is when prices for goods and services are on the rise. Inflation results in higher prices for the same amount goods and services one could pose bought the year before for a lower price. Inflation gives high prices and lower purchasing power from consumers. The dollar amount becomes less than what it previously was. An interest rate is a percentage of the principle, which is the total amount of a loan, precondition by a lender for the use of an asset. The asset could either be a bear or vehicle. An interest rate is usually based on an annual basis so this is also kn own as an annual percentage rate or APR. Somebody who has a high credit score shows that they suffer a good track record with other loans and monthly payments and will be given a lower interest rate. Somebody who has a low credit score is considered more high risk and will be given a higher interest rate. The three sectors government, households, and businesses all have a circular flow between the three. The purchasing of groceries accepts each one of the three sectors in different ways.It goes along with the law of demand and supply and the price level or inflation. Households decide and control what and how much to debauch for consumption. The income effect has part of what consumers buy also. If there is an unexpected change of price this will pertain the purchasing power of the consumer. Since households have control on what they buy and how much this will affect each business that contributes to the grocery stores. The competition in the grocery stores will affect the price of each item will affect what the household buys. diffusion also plays an important role in the economy by getting goods where people want them.If goods are in high demand this may affect the price level which may affect what consumers will buy. The government in turn will make some of their money on sales valuate from the groceries. This tax will be used for expenditures that will go back into the economy. A decrease in taxes could affect the three sectors in a constructive way. If there is a decrease in taxes there is a chance that more tax revenue is generated. The reason is because if people are bringing in more money into their households they will likely spend more money which will help businesses. If businesses are busy and making more money they will be more likely to hire more people who in turn will also be taxed which will help the government. A large layoff of employees would hurt the economy and the three sectors. If people are out of work they are bringing in less money for their household. Since they will not have as much money as they are used to they are less likely to spend money which will hurt businesses. If businesses are not making a profit they may be forced to lay more people off. Because there are so many people rigid off they will likely collect unemployment insurance which will cost the government more money.

Personal Statement Essay Example for Free

Personal Statement EssayI was asked to winter formal my freshman division of high school by the publicise Force JROTC commander who just happened to be a senior. Having the head-person in charge even talk to me at all in all was a big deal back then. I still dont know how it happened, but with a bit of dumb luck and a lot of late nights out, we started dating. Danail and I were on top of the world. There was nothing we couldnt accomplish if we set our minds to it, and so we did. We were always out on adventures. You could becharm us hiking, backpacking, or just hanging out with friends, but we always had huge smiles on our faces.Slowly getting to know each other better, and supply our futures together, one important detail I found out is that during her sophomore year of high school she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was in remission, but at the expense of having to endure extensive treatments of chemotherapy and radiation. Halfway through my sophomore year (we were still dating) she was re-diagnosed with malignant tumors in her abdomen. She went through several hospitals and even more treatment plans, property her optimism high and still living to love life.Fast forward to this last summer when at 2am on June 12th, 2012 at the Cancer Treatment Center of the States in Arizona, our last hope, Danail Lynn Frey took her last breath. She meant more to me than I could ever comprehend at the time, and my life was suddenly derailed in an instant. Immediately after Danail passed away, I entangle abandoned and without purpose. I had shaped my life around this one individual and for the first time in my life, I didnt know what I wanted. Danail was a nursing student at ASU, and we had always planned on me becoming a doctor, and then us joining an organization that benefits third world countries.Having to qualifying my original plans of becoming a neurosurgeon to shape my future with someone else was definitely not an easy decision. Now I didnt know wh at to do, and I had to get out. With that being the first summer that I wasnt packed full of already scheduled activities, I ended up learning how to scuba dive and I went on a trip to San Carlos, Mexico. This trip was just the chance I requireed to get out of the painfully familiar places at home and really let me think about what I was going to do.I realized that I had to regain a sense of self and perchance even some independence. Having witnessed first-hand Danails amazing oncology team provide for her the c ar she most certainly deserved, I was able to better fully realize that I knew being in healthcare, more specifically being a physician, was still in store for my future. On top of that, being in the Civil Air Patrols emergency services team and already having a background in search and rescue attending the National Emergency function Academy in Indiana, I decided to combine the two. This thought process started a new personal track revolving around my future that ignited a new fire and passion having been able to better understand the realities of medicine. With that combination, my new focus all geared toward bettering our current healthcare system and looking into global rescue and relief with organizations like the WHO. All of these events helped shape what I want to be, and ultimately, at the end of the day, I know I will realistically limiting my mind again. Currently here is where I am at.I know it may sound eager, unrealistic, and possibly even pretentious to say this with the only one-specialty or track that doctors are supposed to choose, but maybe eventually not. I would like to practice in multiple fields that I believe are all connected to make the ultimate healer. I have interned as an ophthalmic technician learning about eyes and optics, which has really intrigued me. However, I have withal always been fascinated by human behavior and the inner workings of the mind and plan to potentially major in neuroscience.Because of all the se cond-hand chemo and radiation tragical memories that I experienced, I want to bring alternative cures to cancer into tested clinical environments studying oncology. On top of that, I will always be in the rescue settings. So, trauma and world health medicine are also on my mind. I want to always build upon my education and health experience to incorporate that knowledge into a practice of its own. If Danail taught me anything, it would have been how to love, and that if I set my mind to something, especially as important as medicine, I need to remain true to my goals and use her as my inspiration to achieve them.

Causes And Effects Of Strokes Biology Essay

Causes And Effects Of Strokes Biology EssayStroke is defined as A neurological shortage of cerebrovascular crusade that persists beyond 24 hours or is interrupted by death within 24 hours. WHO (1970)A blow is the rapidly developing breathing out of sensation functions delinquent to a disturbance in the parenthood vessels supplying stock certificate to the brain. This place be due to ischemia caused by thrombosis or embolism or due to a hemorrhage. As a result, the change bea of the brain is unable to function, leading to inability to move one or more limbs on one side of the luggage compartment, inability to understand or formulate speech or inability to see one side of the visual argona (Donnan GA, Fisher M. May 2008).PREVALANCE AND INCIDENCEStroke could soon be the most common cause of death oecumenic (Murray CJ, Lopez AD 1997). Stroke is currently the secant leading cause of death in the Western world, ranking aft(prenominal) kindling disease and before cancer ( Donnan GA, Fisher M, May 2008)and it causes 10% of deaths worldwide (World Health Organization. 2004) .It has been noted that gibe incidence may vary considerably from country to country. The prevalence of stroke in India was estimated as 203 per 100,000 populations above 20 years, amounting to a total of about 1 million cases. Stroke represented 1.2% of total deaths in India (PK Sethi Neurosciences Today 2002).SEX DIFFERENCESMen are 1.25 times more in all likelihood to suffer strokes than women(PK Sethi Neurosciences Today 2002), yet 60% of deaths from stroke occur in women (Villarosa, Linda, Ed.1993).CLASSIFICATIONStrokes can be classified into two major categories ischaemic and hemorrhagic. ischaemia is due to interruption of the blood supply, while hemorrhage is due to rupture of a blood vessel or an abnormal vascular structure. 80% of strokes are due to ischemia the remainders are due to hemorrhage (Donnan GA, Fisher M. May 2008).ISCHEMIC STROKEIn an ischemic stroke, blood su pply to a type of the brain is decreased, leading to dysfunction of the brain thread in that area. The four reasons responsible for ischemic stroke are thrombosis, embolism (Donnan GA, Fisher M. May 2008), general hypoperfusion (Shuaib A, Hachinski VC .September 1991) and venous thrombosis (Stam J. 2005).HAEMORRAGIC STROKEIntracranial hemorrhage is the accumulation of blood anywhere within the skull vault.Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is bleeding directly into the brain tissue, forming a bit by bit enlarging haematoma.RISK FACTORSHigh blood pressure, High blood cholesterol levels, Diabetes, Cigarette smoking (Hankey GJ. August 1999), Heavy alcohol consumption (Reynolds K, Lewis B, Nolen JD, et al .2003) , drug use, (Sloan MA, 1991), pretermit of physical activity, obesity, unhealthy diet (American Heart Association.2007) and Atrial fibrillation.CAUSESWhen the flow of blood in an artery supplying the brain is interrupted for more than a fewer seconds, brain cells can die, caus ing permanent damage. An interruption can be caused by either blood curdles or bleeding in the brain. Most strokes are due to blood clots that blocks the blood flow to brain. Bleeding into the brain occurs if a blood vessel ruptures or if there is a significant injury (Ay H Furie KL. 2005).BLOOD CLOTSA common cause of stroke is atherosclerosis. Fatty deposits and blood platelets collect on the walls of the arteries, forming establishments. Over time, the plaques slowly begin to block the flow of blood. The plaque itself may block the artery enough to cause a stroke (Ay H Furie KL. 2005).The plaque causes the blood to flow abnormally, which leads to a blood clot. A clot can stay at the site of narrowing and prevent blood flow to all of the smaller arteries it supplies. In other cases, the clot can pilgrimage and wedge into a smaller vessel (Ay H Furie KL. 2005).Strokes caused by embolism are most unremarkably caused by heart disorders. An embolism may bulge in a major blood vess el as it branches off the heart. A clot can also form elsewhere in the body for any number of reasons, and then travel to the brain, causing a stroke (Ay H Furie KL. 2005).Arrhythmias of the heart, such as atrial fibrillation, can be associated with this type of stroke and may contribute to clot formation. Other causes of embolic stroke embroil endocarditis, or use of a mechanical heart valve. A clot can form on the artificial valve, break off, and travel to the brain (Ay H Furie KL. 2005).BLEEDING IN THE BRAINA second major cause of stroke is bleeding in the brain. This can occur when small blood vessels in the brain become weak and burst. Some people have shortcomings in the blood vessels of the brain that make this more likely. The flow of blood after the blood vessel ruptures damages brain cells (Ay H Furie KL. 2005).PATHOPHYSIOLOGYISCHAEMICIschemic stroke occurs due to a loss of blood supply to part of the brain, initiating the ischemic cascade. Brain tissue ceases to function if deprived of oxygen for more than 60 to 90 seconds and after a few hours will suffer irreversible injury possibly leading to death of the tissue. Atherosclerosis may disrupt the blood supply by narrowing the lumen of blood vessels leading to a reduction of blood flow, by causing the formation of blood clots within the vessel (National Institute of neurological Disorders and Stroke.1999).Embolic infarction occurs when emboli formed elsewhere in the circulatory system, typically in the heart as a consequence of atrial fibrillation, or in the carotid arteries. These break off, enter the cerebral circulation, then lodge in and occlude brain blood vessels (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.1999).HAEMORRAGICHemorrhagic strokes results in tissue injurys by causing compression of tissues from an expanding hematomas. This can distort and injure the tissues. In addition, the pressure may lead to a loss of blood supply to affected tissue with resulting infarction, and the blood released by brain hemorrhage appears to have direct toxic effects on brain tissue and vasculature (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.1999).SIGNS AND SYMPTOMSA stroke symptom typically starts suddenly, over seconds to minutes, and in most cases dont progress further. The symptoms depend on the area of the brain affected. The more extensive the area of brain affected, more the functions that are likely to be lost (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.1999).A sudden development of one or more of the following indicates a strokeParesis or paralysis of any part of the body, Numbness, tingling, or decreased sensation, Changed or diminished vision, Language difficulties, including slurred speech, inability to speak, inability to understand speech, impediment in reading or writing, Swallowing difficulties or drooling, Loss of memory, Vertigo, Loss of counterbalance or coordination, Personality changes, Mood/emotion changes, Drowsiness, le thargy, or loss of consciousness, Uncontrollable spirit movements or eyelid drooping.SUB TYPESIf the area of the brain affected contains one of the three prominent Central nervous system pathways-the spinothalamic tract, corticospinal tract, and dorsal column, symptoms may include hemiplegia and muscle weakness of the face, numbness, reduction in sensory or vibratory sensation. In most cases, the symptoms affect only one side of the body. The defect in the brain is usually on the opposite side of the body depending on which part of the brain is affected. In addition to the above CNS pathways, the brain stem also consists of the 12 cranial nerves. Hence a stroke affecting the brain stem can produce symptoms relating to deficits in the cranial nerves. The symptoms are alter smell, taste, hearing, or vision, drooping of eyelid and weakness of ocular muscles, decreased reflexes like gag, swallow and pupil reactivity to light, decreased sensation and muscle weakness of the face, balance problems and nystagmus, altered breathing and heart rate, weakness in sternocleidomastoid muscle with inability to turn head to one side, weakness in tongue. If the cerebral cortex is involved, the CNS pathways can again be affected, but also can produce the symptoms like aphasia, apraxia, visual field defect, memory deficits, hemineglect, disorganized thinking, confusion, hypersexual gestures ,anosognosia (Bamford JM 2000).When the cerebellum is involved, the patient may have the symptoms like stretch out walking, altered movement, coordination, Vertigo and disequilibrium (Bamford JM 2000).ASSOCIATED SYMPTOMSLoss of consciousness, headache, and vomiting usually occurs more often in hemorrhagic stroke than in thrombosis because of the increased intracranial pressure from the leaking blood compressing on the brain.DIAGNOSISThe techniques which were used to diagnose the stroke are neurological examination, CT scans or MRI scans, Doppler ultrasound, and arteriography. The diagnosing of stroke itself is clinical, with assistance from the resourcefulness techniques. Imaging techniques also assist in determining the subtypes and cause of stroke. There is yet no commonly used blood test for the stroke diagnosis itself, though blood tests may be of help in finding out the likely cause of stroke (Hill M 2005).PREVENTIONScreening for risque blood pressure at least every two years, regular cholesterol check up, treat high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease, follow a low-fat diet, quit smoking, exercise regularly, lose weight if you are over weight, avoid excessive alcohol use (Goldstein LB, Adams R, Alberts MJ et al. 2006).TREATMENTTreatment of ischemic strokePharmacologic thrombolysis with the drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), Mechanical thrombectomy and anticoagulants.Treatment of hemorrhagic strokePatients with intracerebral hemorrhage require neurosurgical evaluation to detect and treat the cause of the bleeding, although many may no t need surgery. Patients are monitored and their blood pressure, blood sugar, and oxygenation are kept at optimum levels.PHYSIOTHERAPY TREATMENTThe rehabilitation techniques commonly used were Roods Sensorimotor Approach, Knotts and Voss Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, Brunnstroms move Therapy, Bobaths Neuro Developmental Therapy, Motor Relearning Programme, Bimanual Rapid Alternating Movement, Motor Imagery Therapy, Robot Assisted Movement Therapy, Functional Electrical Stimulation, Bilateral Isokinetic Training, Cyclic Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation, Biofeedback etc.PROGNOSISThe results of stroke vary widely depending on size and location of the lesion (Stanford infirmary Clinics.2005). Dysfunctions correspond to areas in the brain that have been damaged. Disability affects 75% of stroke survivors enough to decrease their employability (Coffey C. Edward.2000). Stroke can affect patients physically, mentally, emotionally, or a compounding of the three. 30 to 50% of stroke survivors suffer post stroke depression, which is characterized by lethargy, irritability, sleep disturbances, lowered self esteem, and withdrawal. Depression can reduce motivation and exasperate outcome (Senelick Richard C.1994).

Duke Ellingtons Contribution To American Jazz Film Studies Essay

Duke Ellingtons Contribution To American Jazz Film Studies EssayThe famous U.S. go to sleep euphonyian known as Duke Ellington was born on April 29, 1989 to two medicamentian parents who both played the piano. His legal name at birth was Edward Kennedy Ellington, and the nickname Duke was whiz he acquired from childhood friends who intendd that the way he dressed and the manner in which he carried himself gave him a regal appearance. (Wikipedia, 2013).While he himself eschewed the use of the term sleep together to define the kind of music he played, opting instead to refer to it as simply American music, critics have repeatedly identified him as one of the seminal figures in the development of jazz, which is often identified as one of the few authentically U.S.-developed musical forms. (Biography, 2013).Ellington was an African-American and his maternal grandmother was an ex-slave. His own introduction to music in a formal sense occurred when he was seven years old, with him c ommencing piano lessons. His passion for music was intense, even during his youth and he is put down as having written his first song, Soda Fountain Rag, which some called Poodle Dog Rag, in 1914 at a epoch when he was personally working at a soda fountain at a restaurant known as the Poole Dog Cafe. At the time, his formal music training did not take the reading and writing of music notes on paper. He was to develop those skills later in life. (Wikipedia, 2013).As a young man, in addition to the restaurant job, he worked at the games of the Washington, D.C. Senators baseball team as a peanut vendor. Other recreations included compete pool, and it was there that he encountered many a(prenominal) contemporary piano players who provided merriment there, utilizing a variety of styles, including ragtime. It was only then that he started to entertain the notion that he might himself become a professional musician. Ellington himself described both his wee on life and his musical line of achievement in an autobiography he published in 1973 entitled Music is my Mistress. (Ellington, 1976).By the summer of 1916, he declined to pursue an offered eruditeness to study art in Brooklyn, New York at the Pratt Institute, preferring instead to provide musical entertainment in various small venues in and around Washington, D.C. for money, although the amounts acquire were relatively meager compared to the success he was to experience later in life. He continued, for a time, to attend commercial art classes at the Armstrong Manual knowledge School, but a dealoned those studies a mere 90 day or so before a scheduled graduation. (Ellington, 1976).It was after that occurred that he summoned up the fortitude to assemble small groups of musicians to band together to play for dances and other social events, while working on the side as a sign puma to augment his otherwise meager income. His first more permanent formal band was formed in 1917 and was known as The Dukes Se renaders, who were described as morose Syncopators in an ad he took out in the then relatively natural media of the local telephone directory. (Ellington, 1976)Because Washington, D.C. was the capitol of the U.S., Ellington also managed to survive economically in those early years by working as a messenger for the State Department and U.S. Navy. Later, his band would become quite a local hit playing at parties put on by foreign embassies located in the capitol as well as for society dances and balls. While this was an era where there was stillness much segregation in the U.S., his group did manage to play to both white and African-American audiences, which was unusual at the time. (Wikipedia, 2013).Ellington got married on July 2, 1918 to Edna Thompson, who had attended the alike high school as he did, and they had a son, Mercer Kennedy Ellington, himself a musician ingenious in the use of both the piano and trumpet, who at measure operated as the business manager for his fathe rs more successful group while also running his own band. (Wikipedia, 2013).Looking back on his vocation, which only ended with his dying on May 24, 1974 from lung cancer and pneumonia, music critics widely agree that his influence helped raise the regard of jazz among other forms of music in the U.S. At the time of his death, despite his advanced age and ill health, he was continuing to actively work as an orchestra leader. He did not exclusively play jazz. however, and at times delved into the areas of classical, popular, gospel and blues music, as well as composing scores for popular work pictures. As the U.S. recording industry took off, Ellington and his groups recorded music for many companies, while continuing to tour widely and play live. In 1924 alone, Duke Ellington released eight records, indicating the beginning of a very fertile period for him that continued almost unabated until his death. (Wikipedia, 2013).Ellington became a seminal figure in the so-called Harlem R enaissance and gradually expanded the size of his musical group, with it becoming the house band in the fabled Cotton Club in Harlem, New York in 1927. Ellingtons fame grew and he was widely known for playing the bugle at the end of many performances. Radio broadcasts of his music live from the club helped him develop an audience that stretched nationwide and encompassed many people who had never seen him perform live in New York. (Biography, 2013).A song that Duke Ellington recorded with his orchestra and Adelaide Hall in the fall of 927, entitled Creole Love Call became a runaway hit, selling widely through the world, and firmly establishing Ellington and his group as star musicians. (Wikipedia, 2013)Ultimately, Ellington became perhaps best known for expanding the concept of the small jazz band, playing only in tiny nightclubs, to a full big band experience, with his group becoming a full orchestra with him as the leader. The size and scope of the group gave Ellington much more l atitude to sample with new musical pathways and undertake things never tried before. (Wikipedia, 2013).His versatility was shown by the fact that he recorded for numerous recording labels, often at the same time, an unusual thing. He sometimes would frame different versions of the same compositions for inclusion on records for the different companies. (Wikipedia, 2013).He obtained even broader popularity after appearing at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival, where his orchestras performance was met by the audiences perfervid acclaim, and went on long as the festival organizers had planned to shut things down. The result was worldwide frenzied publicity, including Duke Ellingtons appearance on the front cover of Time magazine, and Ellingtons best-selling(predicate) recording of his entire career, Ellington at Newport.(Wikipedia, 2013).One area where he experienced a rare lack of success was his inability to breakthrough in the new medium of television, where jazz was somewhat ignored as a form of music. But both his live performances and his popular recordings continued throughout his life. His musical career spanned the Great Depression, the Second World War, the 1950s, the turbulent 1960s with the explosion of the civil rights movement and the conflict over the Vietnam war, and the Watergate Era of Richard Nixon. Throughout those changing times, Duke Ellingtons commitment to experiment with his music and burst through staid conventions of form and length remained the one constant thing, raising the standard high for other jazz musicians to try to emulate. Critics believe that there are few, if any, figures in the development of American jazz more important and more central than Duke Ellington. (Wikipedia, 2013).Ellingtons root strength was as a skilled jazz pianist, but he is often more remembered for his orchestral arrangements and composing of both jazz and other popular musical pieces. His group for the bulk of his career was known simply as the Duk e Ellington Orchestra and it continues to tour the world today under the aegis of his son, who serves as the archivist for his fathers rich legacy. (Wikipedia, 2013).Duke Ellingtons contributions to American music were recognized by no fewer than twelve Grammy awards, starting with his first one in 1959 with three awards for music he composed and performed for Anatomy of a Murder, a major motion picture. He composed and performed music for a number of other motion pictures. Most of these awards, however, were for jazz performances and compositions, with three of the awards given after his death, including the last one in 1999 for the historical jazz album The Duke Ellington Centennial Edition, collecting the recordings he made for the RCA Victor company from 1927-1973. He received a special Grammy Lifetime exertion award in 1966. (Biography, 2013).Nine of his recordings were also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, starting with Black and Tan Fantasy in 1928 and concluding with Far East Suite in 1967. His 1932 jazz hit It Dont Mean a Thing (If It Aint Got That Swing) was also inducted, was highly popular worldwide, and is still widely played today. He was also given a Special Citation by the Pulitzer Prize Committee after his death, and received a U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969. He was also inducted into the french Legion of Honor in 1973. (Wikipedia, 2013).
